Private Travel Alternatives to Charter Jets

Other alternatives include cards offered by charter operators and brokers that allow consumers to prepay for a certain number of hours of flying time. Depending on the number of flight hours purchased, purchase of a card may grant priority access to the charter service and guarantee the consumer that a choice of aircraft and of destinations will be available even on notice of only a few hours. The use of a card streamlines the charter process and card users may avoid certain fees, such as a fee for having to fly the aircraft from its home base to another airport to pick up passengers. Consumers can exchange the hours of flying time left on the card for cash. However, even the least amount of flying time that a consumer could purchase with these cards represents a substantial investment.

Consumers can also invest in fractional ownership of a private jet. Again, the initial investment for this alternative can be substantial, and hidden costs may be included, such as maintenance fees. A fee may also be charged if the consumer chooses to leave the group of partial owners. Fractional ownership is also a less flexible alternative than chartering as the jet may not be available when needed if another owner is using it.
