How to run counter strike 1.6 on Windows Xp 64 bit
As you all know Counter strike 1.6 is an old game, and was only designed for 32 bit Windows. Many Counter strike 1.6 users weren’t able to run counter strike 1.6 on their 64 bit windows. I m one of them. I was able to run Counter strike 1.6 on my Windows xp 64 bit for about 6 months with no problems and errors, But slowly and gradually many problems started coming on my way.
First problem that appeared was the Console problem. After I opened the console, Any letter i would type would close the console. This problem made me stop using the console, and Hate Cs 1.6. After this bug, another huge problem appeared. Even tough i had 4 GB RAM, Everytime i launched Cs 1.6 i would get this Error, “Available Memory less than 15MB”. Fortunately, I didnt end up Deleting my favourite game. All i had to do is Download this file, and Replace it with the original hl.exe And everything Got Fixed
.
Replacing this file makes Counter strike 1.6 run on Windows Xp 64 bit. A Very kind friend of mine, tried this On windows Vista 64 bit and he said it worked. Unfortunately, I hvnt tried this trick on Windows 7 64 bit. Why dont guy try this trick on windows 7 64 bit and Leave a Comment below if it worked or not ?

Hi guys, i just installed Steam this morning, my problem is that the game block on “Establishing connection to the server …”, i tried to replace the hw.dll and nothing changed. Still looking for a solution …
Are you using Windows Xp x64 ? Or 32 bit ? These kinda problems occur in Steam sometimes. the best way is to remove Steam from your Computer and Reinstall Steam and And Re-Download and Re-Install Counter strike ( Dont restore Counter strike Using any backup ). If You are Using x64 then Replace hw.dll if you arent then no need to replace it… I guess this should help
Or maybe the problem is with the server you are trying to Join, Try joining a different server and check if you can join or not…
hi i get an error when opening the link. Welcome to 404 error page!
does this also work for counterstrike 1.5 whitout steam?
i have posted on all sorts of forums but got no straight answer on how to run counterstrike on windows xp pro 64bit 4gb RAM.
i treyed all compatibility modes and still get the error;
your system reported only -1296.00k.
Thanks for informing about the broken links, Anyways its fixed now..

Download the File ( hw.dll ) from the link above. I dont think its gonna work with Counter strike 1.5, But Why dont u test it ? Just make a copy of the original hw.dll ( If there is one ) and then replace it with the original one. If it worked, Good for you
But im More than 100% sure that its working with counter strike 1.6, Coz i did this post after i Tested it on my Counter strike 1.6 Steam
Oh actually i’m using Windows 7 64bit, I thought that the solution of the hw.dll would also go for 7 … The problem is the same when I host the game on my own computer, the map creation etc works, but the connection to the server still blocks on “Establishing connection to the server …”, I try to reinstall steam. @Khaled R.Mousa
You problem is Quiet Strange
My Counter strike 1.6 ( Steam ) wasnt even launching properly before replacing hw.dll and after replacing it it went good. I never had any problems connection to any servers etc etc. Ye but i had similar problems on windows xp 32 bit. And what i did was deleted and removed COMPLETELY Steam and cs 1.6 both, and the problem was fixed
i have the same console problem(when i press a button, console closes)
no solutions?
@kozima
Fortunately yes
Open console, and press the letter “a” and then type the command
If u dont press “a” before typing the desired command, the console will close. If you command starts from “a” for eg. Adjustcrosshair, then you will have to press A twice,and then type the remaining letters.
This is the method m using since months. once you get used to it, it wont bug you at all
i love u man thanks aloy it worked had the same problem
god bless ya
i have the issue that when i start up cs. 1.6 on my 64 xp. it starts up but only in my task manager … help pls :S
i am having the same problem as dat wid POLO.
having 64 bit windows 7
4gb ram, 512mb raedon graphics card.
solutions tried:-
1) replaced hw.dll wid sum new dll
2) run it in compatibility mode as win xp sp3, and also wid admin previlidges.
but none worked, it really sucks!!
plz help!!
when i try to connect to the server, d screen goes black and crashes!!
@raj
Brother Even i using Windows 7 64 bit with 512 MB nvidia and 4 GB RAM. All i did was installed Steam, and then downloaded and installed Counter strike 1.6 directly through steam and Everything Worked Fine for me.. I dint face any Problem at all. According to Steam Community, Windows 7 64 bit can run Cs 1.6 without any problem, So you dont need to try to run the game on Compatibility mode, as its useless. Well, If you are running the fake Version of 1.6 then try getting a Copy of the original one, through Steam, But if you are already on Steam then Do your self a favour By removing Counter strike 1.6 and Steam and then Re Download and install the whole thing again. This trick usually workes with most of the problems.. lets hope that it workes with you too.
hey i m using win 7(64 bit).cs is not working properly as its list never opens (play counter strike,new multiplayer game,find server…etc)not even console.i replaced the hw.dll as you specified but problem remain same…
give me a solution
- Delete Counter strike from Steam ( Dont make a backup – Just re – download the whole thing again )
- Delete Steam ( Just incase Cs doesn’t work after re-installing, You wont have to go throw the whole method again )
- Go to the installation Folder, and delete the Valve Folder ( Removing Steam From Add and Remove Programs wont remove the Valve folder. )
- Re – Download Steam
- Re- Install Counter Strike ( Dont use the backup to Restore it, PLEASE! )
- Counter Strike Should work Now! There is no need to Replace hw.dll, Because Steam Now detects the OS automatically and Provides the required files.
Even i m using Windows 7, 64 bit. And i m facing No problems at all. Even you shouldn’t face.
Replacing hl.exe = VAC ban if I’m not mistaken.
Now we dont even need to replace hl.exe and hl.dll, because steam Recognizes our OS and Gives us the file accordingly. And seriously, i replaced hl.exe many times, but i never got banned. My VAC status is still “Very Good”
o it works..but is not full screen with my monitor..it has some black ampty spaces in the both sides
Yes Thats There is some Kind of a problem with the Resolution of Windows 7. When i had Xp and vista, it worked Full screen, But ever since i got Windows 7, Even i got those two Black empty Spaces on the two sides of the screen.
